Canary in the Home is my personal journal of a journey that started May 13, 2014. The day everything went sideways and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I believe I have a terrible case of environmental sensitivity and this is my story.

What is MCS?

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity as defined by Web MD:

Multiple chemical sensitivity can include a wide range of symptoms, which some people link to their environment. It's also known as “environmental illness,” "sick building syndrome,” or “MCS.” Your doctor may call it “idiopathic environmental intolerance.”

The symptoms people report are wide-ranging. They include headachefatiguedizzinessnausea, congestion, itchingsneezingsore throatchest pain, changes in heart rhythm, breathing problemsmuscle pain or stiffness, skin rashdiarrheabloating, gas, confusion, trouble concentrating, memory problems, and mood changes.

Possible triggers that set off people's symptoms vary a lot, too. They include tobacco smoke, auto exhaust, perfume, insecticide, new carpet, chlorine, and more. Those feelings are real. But they can happen for many reasons. The question is whether MCS is an illness. Health experts don’t agree on that. The American Medical Association doesn’t consider multiple chemical sensitivity to be an illness.

I am not a medical doctor and don't propose to be one. but I do know that the symptoms I was having matched this.

I was obviously unaware of the chemicals contained in the products I used every day and had never considered how they were effecting my body.

Why had no one told me this before?  My parents, friends, business groups, associates, and employees all seemed to also be unaware of this. Certainly the news media and corporations that benefit from this explosive growth of chemicals used in our food, household products, clothing and automobiles weren’t bringing this information forward…

I couldn't ignore this possibility, and I quickly learned that I needed to explore what was happening to me as I wasn't getting any solutions from doctors or the medical system in general.  I had received no advice on lifestyle, chemicals or toxins in the body or how to remove them.

I had to change to help myself get better.  How long would it take? Who would help me find these solutions?  I quickly figured out it, it was up to me!!!
