Canary in the Home is my personal journal of a journey that started May 13, 2014. The day everything went sideways and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I believe I have a terrible case of environmental sensitivity and this is my story.

Who is Kevin Mullen?

For those of you who don’t know me, let me introduce myself…

My name is Kevin Mullen, and I grew up in the Calgary area, where I still live today. After a brief stint at the University of Calgary, I attended Acadia University in Nova Scotia.  I am committed to lifelong learning and remain involved with Acadia Board, Scholarship program…

I am a husband, a father of 2, and am also an active member of the business community in Calgary. I have always had a love of design, and a keen eye for detail, which brought about my career in the kitchen and bath and homebuilding industry.

Over the last 3 decades I have built 2 successful companies that are industry leaders in the custom kitchen, bathroom and custom home construction.

My companies have had 19 nominations in my local construction market since we joined the industry association, and were awarded the Builder of Merit award in 2013.  We have had 7 nominations for the provincial association and were finalists twice in the national competitions.

We have worked on over 2500 kitchens installed into new and renovated homes.  Our focus has been on renovating and building custom homes and I have been involved with all types of designs, installations and complexity of projects.

In 2013 my life was turned upside down.

When you are going through hell and can't talk, move, breathe, and your skin hurts, you have headaches and you just want to know what has suddenly happened to you, you would certainly hope that the medical community would have answers. At least more answers than I was able to find.

I have started this blog as a means to capture my journey and challenges in discovering and living with a chemical sensitivity.

Call me the Canary!
